The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) has arrested some traders for allegedly altering the expiry dates of expired milk products.
The arrest was made in collaboration with the leadership of Singer Market over an attempt to resell the products to unsuspecting consumers.
The director in charge of enforcement operations, Auwalu Muhammad, disclosed this in a statement signed by the council’s spokesperson, Jamilu Mustapha, on Monday.
Mr Muhammad said that following the development, the council had no option but to seal the shops allegedly involved in the activity.
“We received a distress call this morning from the vice-chairman of Singer Market Traders’ Association, Aminu Umar-Dogara, about the activities going on in the market.
“The council immediately deployed its enforcement officers to the market following the report, which led to the apprehension of suspected traders and sealing of the affected shops.
“We are committed to protecting consumers against the sale of expired, adulterated and substandard products, as well as unlawful alteration of product labels, expiry dates and quality standards,” he said.
Earlier, the council’s executive secretary, Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, said the council would not tolerate practices that violate consumers’ rights and endanger public health.
He warned that anyone found engaging in such unlawful activities would be prosecuted under the law.
The executive secretary commended the leadership of Singer Market Traders’ Association for its cooperation and support in the council’s efforts to rid markets of adulterated, expired and substandard products.
Mr Garba-Muhammad said sustained collaboration between the council and market associations is essential to protecting consumers and safeguarding public health.
