A young applicant seeking admission into the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET) has reportedly been defrauded of N500,000 by a cyber café operator in Lagos.
The victim, who hoped to study Health Assistant at the institution, alleged that the suspect demanded N1.5 million to secure admission. Out of the agreed amount, she deposited N500,000 into his account as part payment. However, despite the payment, the admission never came through.
The situation took another turn when the suspect allegedly told the applicant that she could still obtain a certificate without attending lectures. Disturbed by the claim, she requested a refund, but he allegedly refused and instead resorted to threats.
The case later reached the management of LASCOHET through a petition to the Provost, Prof. Raheem Akewushola. The suspect was invited for questioning and reportedly admitted to the act, although he claimed the deal was linked to a professional body called CIMB, which he failed to properly identify. Items, including stamp pads belonging to various institutions, were said to have been recovered from his shop during the investigation.
The school management has since cautioned members of the public to avoid any dealings with the suspect. They clarified that he is not a staff member or official representative of the college, and warned that anyone engaging him does so at personal risk.
