AFCON Qualifiers: CAF Slams Libya $50000 Fine, Awards S’Eagles 3 Points
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed Nigeria a 3-0 victory over Libya in the AFCON qualifiers, after investigating the abandoned match on October 15 in Benghazi. Libya was found guilty of breaching several CAF regulations.
As a result, Libya has been fined $50,000, which must be paid within 60 days. CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized the organization’s commitment to fair play, stating that they will not tolerate any lack of sportsmanship or unfair treatment in African football.
The poor treatment of the Nigerian team by the host country, which left players and staff stranded at an abandoned airport for almost a day, led to the team’s decision to walk away from the tie. This decision boosts Nigeria’s chances of securing a spot in the 2025 AFCON tournament, with the Super Eagles now leading their group with 10 points from four games.
“The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code,” CAF stated in its ruling.
“We will not tolerate any lack of sportsmanship and unfair treatment in African football,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
