The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to establish the Akwa Ibom State School of Culinary Studies and Hospitality Management and its governing board.
The bill, sponsored by the member representing Uruan State Constituency, Hon. (Dr.) Itorobong Etim, was passed during Tuesday’s plenary session, November 11, 2025, after the adoption of the report presented by the House Committee on Education.
Presenting the committee’s report, the Chairperson, Hon. Kenim Onofiok, said the committee received valuable inputs from stakeholders and members of the public during deliberations, which shaped its final recommendations.
Following clause-by-clause consideration, a motion for the third reading and passage of the bill was moved by Hon. Jerry Otu (Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State Constituency) and seconded by Hon. Nsibiet Akata (Eket State Constituency).
Presiding over the session, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Nsikak-Abasi Orok, to forward the Assembly’s resolution to the State Executive for further action.
Speaking to journalists after the plenary, Hon. Itorobong Etim expressed delight over the passage of the bill and commended the Speaker and her colleagues for their overwhelming support.
She said the school, when established, would provide specialised training for chefs and hospitality professionals, prepare Akwa Ibom chefs for global opportunities, promote local cuisines, and create employment for young people.
“This initiative will not only enhance industrial growth but also strengthen our tourism and hospitality sector while contributing significantly to the state’s economic development,” she said.
Stakeholders have lauded the bill as a bold step toward positioning Akwa Ibom as a leading hub for culinary excellence and hospitality management in Nigeria.
