The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament has successfully concluded its first ordinary session of 2024, which took place from July 1-24, 2024. This is even as the Speaker, Hon Meimunatu Ibrahima commended the Nigerian National Assembly for unflinching support.
The session was marked by significant achievements, including the adoption of resolutions on various themes, debates on public interest issues, and presentations by development partners.
Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Meimunatu Ibrahima, commended the efforts of the parliamentarians, stating, “We have successfully completed this very important session, and I thank Almighty God for enabling us to achieve our objectives.”
The speaker highlighted the introduction of debates on youth migration, climate change, drug abuse, human rights, and poverty in the sub-region, which brought new perspectives and recommendations from the honourable members.
The session also featured presentations by the President of the ECOWAS Commission and Commissioners, which fostered greater synergy and collaboration between institutions. The speaker congratulated the respective delegations for their detailed country reports, emphasizing their importance in guiding parliament’s oversight role.
The speaker expressed gratitude to the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for hosting the ECOWAS Parliament and commended the Secretariat for their initiatives, which improved the quality and efficiency of parliamentary activities.
“As we close this session, I urge honourable members to commit themselves to addressing the challenges we have identified and to attach importance to the immense task that lies ahead of us,” the speaker emphasized.
The ECOWAS Parliament’s achievements during this session demonstrate its commitment to promoting democracy, development, and regional integration in West Africa.
