The Arab League will hold an emergency virtual meeting today to address recent Iranian attacks on several of its member states, a senior official confirmed yesterday.
The meeting, conducted via videoconference, was requested by a coalition of nations including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, and Egypt, according to Hossam Zaki, the Arab League’s Assistant Secretary-General.
The urgent talks come in the wake of escalating military exchanges in the region. The current cycle of violence began on February 28 when US and Israeli forces launched a massive air campaign against Iran. In response, Iran has carried out strikes targeting both Israel and Gulf countries.
Ahead of the meeting, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit issued a strong condemnation of the Iranian actions. He described the attacks as “fully reprehensible,” stating they constitute not only a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter but also an assault on the principles of good neighborliness.
Aboul Gheit warned that the strikes have generated an “unprecedented state of hostility” between Iran and its Arab neighbors.
“This is a grave Iranian strategic mistake, which I hope they will rectify by halting these attacks immediately,” he said.
