A fresh attack by suspected armed herders on Tse Akor Gbatse village in Nyiev Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, has claimed the life of a farmer and left many people injured.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, also led to several residents being declared missing.
The attackers stormed the farming community, located a few kilometres from Daudu town, causing panic among locals. Witnesses reported that the herders had earlier been sighted around Rukubi in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State before they moved into Benue. Residents said the assailants accused neighbouring villages of being connected to the disappearance of some of their children weeks ago.
During the invasion, the herders killed a farmer identified as Tachia Akor, while his wife and another woman known as Mrs. Tsetim also lost their lives. Several others sustained severe injuries and were taken to Adi Hospital in Daudu for treatment. Many villagers remain unaccounted for, raising fears that the casualty figure could increase.
The attack forced many people to flee their homes, leaving the area deserted. Reports indicated that the armed herders were still moving across communities in Guma, putting residents under fear of further assaults.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, who stated that security personnel were deployed to the area. According to the command, investigations have started and the situation has since calmed down, although patrols are ongoing to ensure peace is maintained.
