JALINGO, NIGERIA – The ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Taraba State University remains in effect, according to Dr. Mbave Joshua Garba, Chairman of the union’s university chapter.
Dr. Garba made the statement while speaking to journalists in Jalingo, confirming that ASUU’s position remains unchanged.
The strike, which began on December 5, 2024, coincides with the ongoing 2023/2024 examination session.
It has caused significant disruption, particularly delaying the graduation of final-year students and raising concerns about the academic futures of many others.
The university management had issued a circular on January 7, 2025, announcing the resumption of exams from January 20 to 29, 2025.
Despite this, Dr. Garba reaffirmed that ASUU members at Taraba State University will continue their strike, citing unresolved issues with the state government.
Although some progress has been made with the government meeting 35% of the union’s demands, including the implementation of new minimum wage salaries, ASUU insists that the strike will not end until all its demands are fully addressed.
“We will not call off the strike until the government meets all our demands,” Dr. Garba said.
He also noted that there are no substantial ongoing negotiations between the state government and the union.
As the strike persists, several university offices on campus remain closed, with no specific resolution date in sight.
Dr. Garba appealed to union members to stay calm and focused as the situation continues.
