At 7th Convocation, VC Announces Edo Govt Increases University Subvention to N250 million

The Edo State government has increased its monthly subvention to the state-owned Edo University, Iyamoh, in Etsako West Local Government Area, from N100 million to N250 million to enhance academic excellence.

The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university, Victor Adetimirin, disclosed this at the institution’s 7th convocation held in Iyamoh on Saturday.

He said that when he was presented to the governor by the governing council as VC, the council requested an increase in the university’s monthly subvention from N100 million to N250 million.

“And by October, the monthly subvention had been raised to N250 million,” he said.

The VC said the increased subvention had restored staff confidence and enhanced students’ academic performance.

Mr Adetimirin also stated that 850 students graduated from the university, including 693 first-degree holders and 157 postgraduate students.

He said the 7th convocation marked not just the end of an academic journey but also reaffirmed the university’s mission to become globally competitive, with a focus on service, societal impact, and excellence.

He congratulated the graduands, wishing them enduring success and fulfillment.

“Today, you receive more than certificates, you receive a responsibility.

“The world you are entering is competitive, technology-driven, and constantly evolving.

“It demands innovation, adaptability, resilience, and above all, integrity.

“Let your knowledge solve problems. Let your character inspire trust.

“Let your actions reflect the values instilled in you by this University; be worthy ambassadors of Edo State University, Iyamoh, wherever you go.

“Carry the banner of excellence and discipline with pride. May your future be bright. And may your impact be meaningful,” he added.

The visitor to the university, Governor Monday Okpebholo, in his address, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing the institution into a world-class university.

Mr Okpebholo, represented by his special adviser on policy and strategy, Philip Afaha, pledged to provide quality education in line with his SHINE agenda.

He promised to recalibrate the state’s education system by ensuring that the increased monthly subvention supported optimal performance.

“I assure you that we will continue to increase our subvention and interventions and upgrade this university to world-class status.

“Edo State is becoming an education hub for academic excellence,” he said.

He added, “We have two state universities, one of which is Edo University, Iyamoh.

“The goal is to provide opportunities for self-development to our teeming population within the state,” he said.
