Top leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a closed-door meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja to discuss the party’s future direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, attended by prominent PDP stakeholders, including former Senate President David Mark, former National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus, and ex-governors Aminu Tambuwal, Liyel Imoke, Babangida Aliyu, and Sam Egwu, focused on determining whether the PDP should fully integrate into a broader coalition party or maintain its structure while collaborating through a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“What is being discussed here is not just a merger—it’s about redefining Nigeria’s political direction for 2027. The PDP is weighing its options carefully,” a source familiar with the meeting revealed. The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape the future leadership and structure of Nigeria’s main opposition forces.
The gathering is part of ongoing talks to form a coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, with discussions centered on whether the PDP will fully integrate into a proposed opposition coalition or enter into a strategic electoral alliance aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Other major political players in the negotiations include Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi.
