Bangladesh Seeks to Strengthen Economic Ties with Nigeria

The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, Masudur Rahman, has expressed his country’s desire to strengthen economic ties with Nigeria.

Speaking while receiving a delegation from the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), Rahman highlighted the potential for trade and investment between the two countries.

“We produce everything in industry, garments, any item textile, any item apparels, fashion products, including knitwear inside woven wear, including winter clothes,” Rahman said. “We are world beaters in denim pants, denim pants, gabaddon pants, jeans pants, and they are in high demand globally.”

Rahman noted that Bangladesh is a major producer of textiles and garments, and that the country’s products are exported to many parts of the world. He expressed his desire to see Nigerian businesses take advantage of the opportunities available in Bangladesh.

“Trade is increasing… Some governors, former politician turned businessman going to Bangladesh to do these things,” Rahman said. “We are making beautiful footwear, and our Apex tannery is world-class with an effluent treatment plant.”

The High Commissioner also highlighted the potential for educational cooperation between the two countries. “We are thinking to give a scholarship to Nigeria… I am trying to promote education tie-ups,” he said. “We already give scholarships to African students from countries like Gambia.”

Envoy emphasized the importance of people-to-people connections in strengthening relations between the two countries. “We value deployments because they have a lifestyle,” he said. “We give African students a fully funded scholarship, including a handsome allowance.”

The High Commissioner expressed his optimism about the future of Bangladesh-Nigeria relations. “Our relations are very deep… Two of your diplomats are attending a one-year Foreign Service Course in Bangladesh,” he said. “We are giving them a fully funded scholarship, including a handsome allowance.”

Earlier, while intimating his host of the intent of the visit, the Chairman of Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria, DICAN, Chief Fredrick Idehai explained that the association is the only legitimate body, recognised by the Federal Government of Nigeria to report on Diplomatic issues.

He solicited the cooperation and assistance of the High Commission towards the successful hosting of the forthcoming maiden edition of the DICAN International Security Conference.

The envoy assured DICAN of the High Commission’s readiness to partner with DICAN towards the successful hosting of the June 19, 2025 conference.
