Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has mourned the passing of his cousin, Ms. Gladys Zi, at a Memorial Mass held at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi.
Governor Alia described the late Gladys Zi as a remarkable woman whose life was full of resilience, devotion, and love, despite being cut short at 51.
“Gladys was an independent spirit from a very young age. She loved God and spent her life between the church, her businesses, and her family,” Governor Alia said, highlighting her enduring faith and affection for those around her. He recounted her long struggle with childbearing, losing 12 pregnancies before giving birth to a daughter after 13 years of prayers.
The Governor revealed that Gladys’ passing was sudden and peaceful, noting that she had prepared food for her daughter and younger sister before resting and never waking up. Despite occasional hospital visits, her underlying heart condition claimed her life. “Her death came at a very terrible time for me,” he said, referencing the string of violent incidents in the state and his personal grief.
Governor Alia praised Gladys as a devoted family member, tireless entrepreneur, and loyal supporter during his campaign days. “She gave her all,” he affirmed. He concluded with words of hope and faith: “Blessed are those who work with the Lord and go to rest in Him, for He will wake them on the last day to be with Him forever.”
Rev. Fr. Dr. Sylvester Onmoke, in his homily, reminded the congregation that “it is not how long you live that matters, but how well you live and your relationship with God and others.” The Memorial Mass was attended by government officials, clergy, family members, and sympathizers who came together to honour the deceased and her family.
