The Benue State Government has announced plans to rename Benue State University, Makurdi, after its founder, the late Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu, a Catholic priest and former governor of the state.
Governor Hyacinth Alia made the announcement on Saturday during the university’s combined convocation ceremony. He disclosed that an executive bill for the renaming has been sent to the State House of Assembly. Upon approval, the institution will officially be called Reverend Father Moses Adasu University.
Rev. Fr. Adasu, who served as governor from 1991 to 1992, established the university to enhance access to higher education in Benue State, leaving it as a significant part of his legacy.
“As a way of honoring the founder of this institution, our administration has sent an executive bill to the state assembly for this university to be named after the founder, Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu,” Alia said during his address.
In addition to the renaming initiative, Governor Alia announced plans to establish a satellite campus in Adikpo, located in Kwande Local Government Area, to extend educational opportunities to residents of the Benue North East Senatorial District.
Further supporting the university’s development, the governor pledged 500 computers for the institution’s computer-based test center and announced a full master’s degree scholarship for all graduating students who achieved first-class honors.
Addressing the graduates, Alia urged them to uphold values of integrity and hard work, emphasizing that true success involves making a positive impact on society. “True success is not only about personal growth but also about making a positive impact on society,” he said.
The convocation ceremony highlighted the administration’s commitment to honoring the legacy of Rev. Fr. Adasu while advancing educational access and development across the state.
