An early morning attack on Thursday, January 9, claimed the lives of two police officers when gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists, attempted to invade the Nganzai Police Division in Borno State.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, the incident occurred at around 12:10 a.m.
The police officers on duty repelled the terrorists during a fierce gunfight.
However, the attackers resorted to throwing hand grenades, one of which landed on a shelter tent behind the division, fatally wounding two officers.
The victims’ bodies have been transported to the State General Hospital in Maiduguri, and investigations are ongoing.
The statement further revealed that during a scene assessment by the Commissioner of Police, two hand grenades were recovered by EOD – CBRN Base 13 Maiduguri.
Five survivors sustained severe injuries from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while attempting to confront the attackers.
The Commissioner of Police commended the gallant efforts of the officers who stood firm to repel the terrorists.
He expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and assured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring public safety.
He urged calm, stating that normalcy has been restored in the area.
