A man has lost his life following a bomb explosion in Obinwanne Community, Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State. The incident happened around noon on 21 September, sending panic across the area.
The victim, identified as Chinworeke Mmadu, was said to have been carrying the device when it exploded. Residents, who shared a video of the aftermath online, alleged that he was attempting to plant the bomb near a market before it went off. His legs were badly damaged in the blast, and he later died from his injuries.
Police confirmed the incident and disclosed that the explosion occurred while the man was in possession of the device. Two passers-by were also injured and were taken to a hospital for treatment. Security operatives, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, were deployed to the scene to secure the area and assure residents of safety.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the act and whether the victim had ties to armed groups operating in the region. Authorities have appealed to locals to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and share timely information to help prevent further attacks.
This is not the first time communities in Imo State have experienced such explosions. In June, a woman died in a blast at Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area. Last November, two people were killed when a bomb went off at the International Market in Umuna, Orlu Local Government Area.
The South-east has faced recurring violence in recent years, with government facilities and security operatives often targeted. Although security agencies frequently link the attacks to groups agitating for Biafra, the Indigenous People of Biafra has denied involvement.
