Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has sadly passed away on Sunday.
A concise statement from his long-time media aide, Garba Shehu, confirmed that the ex-leader died in a London medical facility.
Shehu’s announcement, which was distributed to the press, stated: “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN. The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah grant him entrance into Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
This announcement was dated July 13, 2025.
Further information regarding the cause of death has not been disclosed. However, Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, was known for frequently seeking medical care in the UK during and after his presidency.
A retired Major General in the Nigerian Army, Buhari initially led the country as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 before returning as a democratically elected president three decades later. He made history as the first opposition candidate in Nigeria to unseat an incumbent president.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be revealed.
