Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Tambuwal was detained and interrogated by the anti-graft agency over allegations of suspicious cash withdrawals amounting to N189 billion during his tenure as governor. The EFCC accused him of violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The release comes after his detention sparked outrage from opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who condemned the move as a politically motivated witch-hunt aimed at intimidating opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) also issued statements criticizing the EFCC’s actions and accusing the government of using state institutions to target political opponents.
Further details regarding the terms of his release are yet to be disclosed by the EFCC. The commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, has not commented on the matter.
