The funeral prayer (Janaiza) for Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, is scheduled for tomorrow in his birthplace of Daura, Katsina State, as confirmed by his long-time aide, Bashir Ahmad.
The burial rites will commence at 2:00 PM local time, adhering to Islamic customs.
Ahmad shared on social media, “The Janaiza of the late President Muhammadu Buhari will take place in his hometown, Daura, tomorrow at 2:00 PM. May Allah (SWT) have mercy on him.”
President Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London hospital, will be interred in his family compound in Daura. Dignitaries from across Nigeria and international representatives are expected to attend the ceremony to pay their respects.
In anticipation of the influx of mourners, security measures have been intensified in Daura. The Katsina State government has also announced a three-day mourning period, with flags at half-mast across all government buildings.
Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, was known for his modest lifestyle and strong ties to his hometown. His decision to be buried in Daura rather than the capital city of Abuja highlights his lifelong commitment to simplicity.
The funeral will begin with the traditional Islamic washing of the body (Ghusl) and shrouding (Kafan) at the family residence, with only close family members and Islamic clerics involved in these private rites before the public Janaiza prayer at 2 PM.
