A three-storey building still under construction collapsed late on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, in the Yaba area of Lagos State.
The incident happened at about 8:30 pm, trapping workers and other people within the structure.
The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed that four adult men were pulled out alive from the rubble and taken to the hospital for medical care. Rescue teams are still working at the site, as the number of people who may still be trapped has not yet been determined.
Officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the Fire and Rescue Service, and other first responders rushed to the scene to begin search and rescue operations immediately after the collapse. The area has since been sealed off to allow rescuers to carry out their work without obstruction.
The search is ongoing, with workers combing through the debris in hopes of saving more lives. The collapse once again brings attention to the recurring problem of building failures in Lagos and other Nigerian cities, which have claimed many lives over the years.
Authorities have often blamed poor construction methods, the use of inferior materials, and weak enforcement of building regulations for such incidents. Despite repeated warnings from the government to developers, building collapses continue to occur, leaving behind loss, injuries, and displacement for affected families.
