Tragedy struck on Saturday when seven Catholic reverend brothers were killed in a fatal road accident in Cross River State, Nigeria’s South-South region. The accident occurred at Ikwette Community near the Obudu Ranch Resort Bottom Hill while the victims were returning from a tour.
According to an official statement from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, a religious order of Franciscan friars within the Catholic Church, 13 brothers were involved in the accident. “Seven of the brothers died as a result of the accident while six of them sustained various degrees of injuries,” said Reverend Brother John-Kennedy Anyanwu.
The deceased victims were identified as Somadina Ibe-Ojuludu, Chinedu Nwachukwu, Marcel Ezenwafor, Gerald Nwogueze, Kingsley Nwosu, Wilfred Aleke, and Chukwudi Obueze. “We entrust their souls to the merciful love of God and invite all to join us in praying for the happy repose of their souls,” Anyanwu said, adding that funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.
Cross River Governor Bassey Otu expressed sadness over the death of the reverend brothers. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims during this incredibly difficult time,” he said, urging visitors to prioritize safety, including ensuring the roadworthiness of their vehicles.
Initial reports suggest brake failure may have contributed to the devastating incident. The state government has announced a comprehensive review of safety protocols, especially concerning transportation within and around the Obudu Ranch Resort. “Safety is our utmost priority in the Ranch Resort and beyond, and we will be reviewing the safety measures in place at the Ranch Resort for every visitor,” the governor’s statement read. ².
