The Mpu community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State was filled with jubilation on Wednesday following the return of Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, from a United Kingdom prison.
Mrs. Ekweremadu, who had been sentenced to four years and six months in May 2023 for her involvement in an organ trafficking plot, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday, sparking celebrations across her hometown.
Speaking during the festivities, Mr. Benjamin Chijioke, President of Mpu Town Union Federated, described her return as a significant relief for the community.
“Our joy as Mpu people knows no bounds. This is a great day for us. Since morning, it has been jubilation and celebration across all the villages,” Chijioke said.
He noted that the Ekweremadu family’s absence had left a noticeable void in the community, given their history of philanthropy and leadership. Many residents, he said, shed tears of joy as they welcomed Mrs. Ekweremadu back.
The homecoming coincided with the community’s traditional Orie market day, amplifying the celebratory mood.
“We thank God and pray that He intervenes so that our illustrious son and leader, distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu, will soon return home in good health,” Chijioke added.
Ogbuka Edwin, the councillor for Mpu Ward, likened the celebrations to a public holiday.
“It feels like a public holiday here in Mpu. The news brought so much cheer. We will continue to pray until our leader and hero, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, rejoins his family,” he said.
Social media was also abuzz with congratulatory messages and prayers for the Ekweremadu family. One supporter wrote, “Daalu Ezinne! But I can’t wait until I see Ikeoha Global! The man who made me who I am politically—a builder of people and structures.”
The joyous atmosphere underscores the deep connection between the Ekweremadu family and their community, with many expressing hope for Senator Ekweremadu’s return to Nigeria.
