Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby has announced a reciprocal measure against the United States, suspending the issuance of visas to American citizens. This move comes in direct response to a decree by U.S. President Donald Trump limiting visa issuance to Chadians and citizens of 11 other nations.
President Déby confirmed the suspension via social media, stating, “I have instructed the government to act in accordance with the principles of reciprocity and suspend the issuance of visas to US citizens.” He further emphasized Chad’s commitment to upholding its national dignity and pride, despite acknowledging the U.S.’s greater economic and military strength.
The U.S. decree, which sparked this diplomatic retaliation, impacts countries including Chad, Somalia, and others, with the Trump administration citing national security concerns. The White House has maintained that these restrictions are necessary to protect Americans from “foreign adversaries.”
Chad’s visa suspension is scheduled to take effect on June 9, 2025. This development marks a significant turn in diplomatic relations between the two countries, highlighting the growing international impact of tightened immigration policies.
