China Launches World’s Largest Car Carrier with 9,200 Vehicle Capacity
China’s BYD Auto has unveiled the world’s largest car carrier, “BYD Shenzhen,” with a capacity to transport 9,200 vehicles across the globe. The vessel, measuring 219 meters in length and 37.7 meters in width, can reach a maximum speed of 18.5 knots. BYD’s new car carrier is not only impressive in size but also environmentally friendly, featuring liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel technology and energy-saving devices.
The BYD Shenzhen is equipped with BYD Box stationary storage batteries that power the ship during docking or in low-emission zones, significantly reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This innovative design underscores BYD’s commitment to environmental sustainability as it expands its global footprint.
BYD has been rapidly growing its fleet, with the BYD Shenzhen being the fourth roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel in its fleet. The company aims to have a fleet of eight car carriers by 2026, including a vessel with a 10,000-vehicle capacity. BYD’s growing vehicle export ambitions follow record sales of 4.27 million new energy vehicles last year.
“We are accelerating our global presence,” BYD’s ambitions reflect its determination to lead the international new energy vehicle market in 2025. The company has already expanded to 100 countries, positioning itself for further growth. BYD’s recent performance saw it surpass Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle maker, producing 1.77 million vehicles in 2024 ¹ ².
