The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) on Tuesday commissioned a Liquid Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) plant in Yola, Adamawa state capital.
This marks the 54th CNG station in Nigeria, following the commissioning of the 53rd station in Abuja recently.
The new plant, to be operated by Greenville, aims to provide cost-effective and environmentally friendly transportation options.
Speaking at the ceremony, the program Director and Chief executive, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi said the official commissioning of the Greenville Liquefied and Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) facility, the very first of its kind in the entire North East region of Nigeria mark a truly historic milestone.
Oluwagbemi added that it is a gateway to cleaner, more affordable energy for the people of the region.
And it signals the formal launch of the Presidential CNG Initiative’s presence here in Adamawa State, a move he said aligns squarely with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to democratize access to alternative fuels, lower energy costs, and stimulate grassroots economic transformation across Nigeria.
“The launch also kicks off the implementation of the Conversion Incentive Program in Adamawa State—an initiative designed to make the transition from petrol and diesel to CNG not only accessible but affordable for transport operators, fleet owners, and ordinary citizens.”
Alongside this, we are deploying CNG refueling platforms and working with stakeholders to ensure that the infrastructure reaches both urban and rural communities”. He opined.
Speaking on the achievements recorded so far under the initiative since the founding of PCNGI in 2023, Oluwagbemi stressed that over 250 CNG conversion centres nationwide have been established to enabled the conversion of over 20,000 vehicles to run on CNG directly and catalyzing a gross CNG vehicle count of over 50,000 and rising to 100,000 before year end.
“Deployed mobile refueling systems and modular gas stations across critical transport corridors with Ilorin going first about this time last year, and now expanding quickly with 55 plus ONE stations operational and 175 under various stages of development, Partnered with private sector players like Greenville LNG, NIPCO, and others to deepen infrastructure investment and launched training programs to build local capacity and jobs in the CNG value chain with over 4,000 trained.”
“Our PCNGI Basic Awareness Training for roadside mechanics also more recently launched with first 100 graduates emerging recently”.
“With over $500 million of investments, in facilities like this we have enabled more than 10,000 direct jobs and 90,000 indirect ones”. He stated.
Engr. Oluwagbemi said with the launched of plant in Adamawa state, direct and indirect employment opportunities will be created, it will reduce transportation costs for households and SMEs,
Drive demand for locally sourced natural gas, boosting domestic energy security and catalyze an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship in clean energy.
