A tragic accident occurred in Lagos on Tuesday when a fully loaded 40-foot container truck overturned on a tricycle, killing a police officer and one female passenger.
The incident happened along Ijora Causeway, inward Ijora Seven-Up, after the truck lost control while trying to maneuver beneath the Ijora Bridge.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the container truck with registration number XP 368 AKD crushed a tricycle registered as KJA 364 QN, instantly killing the officer and the passenger. Security operatives moved the officer’s body to a morgue in Yaba, while relatives of the female victim arrived at the scene to recover her remains.
Two other victims, including the tricycle rider, were rescued alive but sustained severe leg fractures. They were rushed by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to Jimsan Hospital, Ijora, for urgent treatment.
The chaotic scene drew an angry crowd that attempted to set the truck ablaze, but police units from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri divisions secured the area and ensured emergency responders could carry out their work safely.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for quick recovery of the injured. He praised the coordinated efforts of emergency and security agencies, which prevented further casualties.
He also urged truck and articulated vehicle drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially when driving through bridges and busy roads, to prevent similar accidents.
