The David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences in Uburu, Ebonyi State, is facing fresh scrutiny over allegations of external interference in its administration.
The institution, established by the Ebonyi State Government and later taken over by the Federal Government in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is at the centre of claims that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, still wields considerable influence over its operations.
Sources within the university alleged that key decisions are influenced from outside the institution, raising concerns about governance and independence. Some staff members reportedly described the working environment as tense, with fears of victimisation limiting open dissent.
The situation has been linked to earlier tensions between Umahi’s administration and the Academic Staff Union of Universities during his tenure as governor, particularly over issues related to funding at Ebonyi State University.
Concerns have also been raised about the leadership structure of the university, with claims that the Vice Chancellor, Professor Jesse Uneke, does not operate with full autonomy, a development some insiders say has affected both the university and its teaching hospital.
Further allegations suggest that major medical facilities are managed directly by the university instead of the teaching hospital, raising questions about accountability and efficiency.
The governing council, led by Adebayo Shittu, was also said to have limited influence in decision making. However, Shittu dismissed the claims, stating he has no concerns about how the institution is run.
There are also reports that some staff have resigned over the working conditions, while others described the environment as challenging.
Reacting to the allegations, Umahi’s media aide, Francis Nweze, denied the claims, describing them as unfounded. He maintained that the university operates within established legal frameworks and is governed by its council and relevant federal authorities.
He added that although Umahi played a role in the establishment of the institution, he does not interfere in its day to day administration and remains focused on his duties as minister.
The development has triggered calls from stakeholders for improved transparency and adherence to due process to ensure effective management of the university.
