C’River Lawmaker Apologizes Over Domestic Violence Controversy

By Abasi Ita

Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor, member representing Obubra 1 State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, has issued a public apology following a domestic violence controversy involving his wife.

In a statement released to the public, Agbor expressed “profound apology” to the government, residents of Cross River State, and his constituents for the incident that has attracted widespread attention.

He specifically apologized to Governor Bassey Otu and the First Lady, Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, for any embarrassment the situation may have caused the government and the state’s image. The lawmaker also extended his apologies to the leadership and members of the Cross River State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, for any discomfort or distraction arising from the matter.

Agbor further acknowledged his responsibility to the people of Obubra Local Government Area, traditional rulers, political leaders, and stakeholders who have supported him over the years. He also apologized to his political family, the All Progressives Congress in Cross River State, particularly the APC Obubra Chapter, for any negative attention the incident may have drawn to the party.

“My sincere apology also goes to my wife’s family and my own family for the emotional stress this matter has caused,” he stated.

Addressing public speculation, Agbor admitted that his delay in responding publicly had contributed to misinformation about the incident. “While many narratives circulating online do not accurately reflect the true situation, I take full responsibility for not coming out earlier to address the issue publicly. I acknowledge that my silence created room for speculation, and for that I am deeply sorry,” he said.

The lawmaker concluded by reaffirming his commitment to serving his constituents with humility, responsibility, and renewed dedication, promising to focus on his duties in the state legislature.

Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor’s apology marks an attempt to take responsibility and restore public confidence following the controversy, highlighting the importance of accountability among public officials.
