David Beckham’s former bodyguard, Craig Ainsworth, has been found dead in Spain after a tragic disappearance.
Ainsworth, a 40-year-old ex-Royal Marine, had been struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since serving in Afghanistan.
His mother, Sally, revealed the devastating news on social media, sharing a heart-wrenching final message her son posted on Facebook: “Goodbye Beautiful People. To live is the rarest thing. Most people exist; that is all. I endured immense pain over four years since the lockdown unraveled everything, and lost truly incredible friends and colleagues”.
Ainsworth worked as a bodyguard for high-profile clients, including Beckham, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Lawrence, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He joined the Beckhams’ security team in 2013, working in London’s Holland Park, and was hired through US security firm Gavin De Becker. Ainsworth’s background as a Royal Marine Commando and bodyguard was marked by intense training, including passing tests like being pepper-sprayed in the eyes and tackling an MMA fighter.
In his final post, Ainsworth expressed his pain and struggles with PTSD, stating, “I lived the life of ten men with a pure heart and good intentions”. His mother, Sally, launched an urgent appeal for information about his disappearance, which led to the discovery of his body in Spain ¹ ².
Ainsworth’s life took a dramatic turn after leaving the military, where he faced devastating losses, including 11 friends lost to suicide in just 16 months. He found new purpose in coaching others to build resilience under pressure and overcome mental health struggles.
His work with the Beckhams and other celebrities showcased his expertise, with David Beckham described as “charming” and Victoria as dedicated to her family and work.
As news of Ainsworth’s passing spread, condolences poured in from friends and acquaintances, including Middlesex University professor Linda Duffy, who wrote, “I’m sorry for your loss Sally. Condolences to all the family. Thank you for your service Craig. A brave Royal Marine” ³.
