A fast-moving wildfire in Keratea, southeast of Athens, has left one person dead and destroyed homes, forcing thousands to flee.
Fire crews found the body of an elderly man inside his home in the Togani area, near where the blaze began.
The fire started on Friday afternoon in Manoutso, spreading quickly through dry grass and farmland under strong winds reaching up to 9 Beaufort.
Thick smoke and gusts are making firefighting efforts difficult.
Seven areas — Synterina, Dimolaki, Maliasteka, Agiasma, Charvalo, Drosia and Ari — have been evacuated. Roads are blocked as flames cross fields into residential zones.
The blaze now extends over seven kilometres, moving south into pine forests and towards Anavyssos.
Around 190 firefighters, ground teams, 44 vehicles, helicopters, aircraft, and heavy machinery are tackling the flames, with support from crews from the Czech Republic and Romania. Army engineering units are also assisting.
Later on Friday, another major fire broke out in Helidoni, in western Greece’s Ancient Olympia municipality.
Strong winds are spreading embers, threatening high-voltage lines and the archaeological site.
Evacuation alerts have been sent to nearby villages, and one person with severe burns has been taken to hospital.
Officials warn of extreme fire risk across Attica, the Peloponnese, and western Greece due to ongoing dry and windy conditions.
