German basketball star Dennis Schröder was subjected to racist chants during Germany’s 107-88 win over Lithuania at the EuroBasket championship in Tampere, Finland.
The incident occurred as players and staff were leaving the court at half-time, when monkey noises were heard from a section of Lithuanian supporters.
Schröder condemned the abuse, stressing that racism has no place in basketball.
His wife later shared examples of further racist insults targeting him online, describing such attacks as a constant reality for public figures.
German Basketball Federation president Ingo Weiss confirmed the incident, calling it unacceptable.
Lithuanian players personally apologized to Schröder, while Lithuanian Basketball Federation chief Mindaugas Balciunas said the behavior was against both basketball and social values.
FIBA, the sport’s governing body, reviewed video footage and identified the individual responsible.
The fan has since been banned from all EuroBasket 2025 matches, while Finnish authorities were notified for further action.
