DICAN Conference to Tackle Global Security Challenges, Disinformation

The Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN) is set to host its maiden International Diplomatic and Security Conference in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This all important event will take place in Abuja and will focus on Nigeria’s foreign policy direction amidst rising global uncertainties. The conference theme, “Nigeria’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Strategy Amidst Global Security Challenges, Strategic Misperceptions, and the Age of Disinformation: The vRole of Diplomacy, Intelligence, and Media in Shaping National and Global Stability,” reflects the complexities of the current global landscape.

The conference will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders from the diplomatic, intelligence, security, media, and academic communities. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, will deliver the keynote address at the high-level gathering scheduled to take place at the Rotunda Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.

The event is expected to draw a wide range of participants, including former Nigerian presidents, state governors, legislators, security chiefs, heads of intelligence agencies, ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic corps. A robust panel session will feature distinguished speakers, including the Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), and Prof. Sheriff Ghali of the University of Abuja.

The conference aims to deepen public understanding of the 4Ds Strategy – Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora – as Nigeria repositions itself in a complex world order. As DICAN notes, “This landmark event underscores the critical intersection between diplomacy, national security, and the media in navigating Nigeria’s global engagements.”

A key aspect of the conference will be a presentation on Disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) and its impact on Nigeria. This topic is particularly relevant in today’s digital age, where information can be manipulated and spread rapidly. The conference will provide a platform for experts to discuss the challenges posed by FIMI and potential strategies for mitigating its effects.

Media representatives, diplomats, policymakers, and scholars are all invited to attend the conference. By bringing together individuals from various backgrounds and expertise, the conference aims to foster a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding Nigeria’s foreign policy and global engagements.
