Algeria has expelled Morocco’s Deputy Consul in Oran, Mohamed Sefiani, declaring him “persona non grata” and ordering him to leave within 48 hours.
The move adds another layer of tension to the already strained relations between the two North African neighbors.
According to Algeria’s Foreign Ministry, Khalid Chihani, the acting head of Morocco’s Consulate General in Algeria, was summoned and informed of the expulsion by Mokhtar Amine Khelif, Director-General of Protocol. The ministry stated that Sefiani’s actions were “suspicious” and “incompatible” with his diplomatic role, violating both Algerian laws and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. However, specific details about his alleged misconduct were not disclosed.
Morocco has yet to respond publicly to Algeria’s decision. The two countries have had no formal diplomatic ties since August 24, 2021, when Algeria severed relations, accusing Morocco of hostile actions.
Tensions between Algeria and Morocco have worsened in recent years, particularly over the Western Sahara dispute. Morocco insists on autonomy under its rule, while the Polisario Front—backed by Algeria—demands a self-determination referendum. Algeria also hosts thousands of refugees from the contested region, further fueling the divide.
This latest diplomatic expulsion signals ongoing distrust between the two nations, raising concerns over further escalations in their long-standing political and territorial disputes.
