Kemi Badenoch has drawn attention by stating that she sees Argentina’s president Javier Milei as a model for how she wants to lead Britain.
She expressed support for a similar approach to shrinking state power, calling Milei’s leadership a guide for her future government plans.
Milei, known for his drastic budget cuts and libertarian views, became president of Argentina in 2023 with a pledge to reduce state spending.
He has openly praised Margaret Thatcher and brought a radical style to governance.
Badenoch, currently leading a struggling Conservative Party in third place in the polls, believes that a similar bold approach is needed in the UK.
In an interview, she said her leadership would focus on changing how the state functions, not just reducing its size.
She argued that her goal is to reshape what government does and why, rather than simply making cuts.
This reflects a vision influenced by Milei but adapted to the British context.
She also addressed the growing support for Nigel Farage and Reform UK, saying that while his message is attracting voters now, it may not last.
Badenoch claimed that Reform’s platform puts them to the left of the Conservatives on some issues, like welfare.
She believes voters will eventually turn away from what she described as unreliable messaging.
Despite recent internal unrest, Badenoch denied that her position as party leader is at risk.
She cannot face a leadership challenge until November and said she pays little attention to attempts to undermine her.
Looking ahead, she is planning to focus heavily on economic issues.
Her party’s first conference under her leadership is set for October, where immigration will be a key topic.
She is also considering a tougher stance on the European Convention on Human Rights, saying that the UK might need to leave the agreement.
