A medical tribunal in the United Kingdom has been told how Dr. Suhail Anjum, a consultant anaesthetist at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, abandoned a patient who was under anaesthesia during an operation in order to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in another theatre.
The incident occurred when Dr. Anjum requested a short break, asking a colleague to oversee the patient during the ongoing procedure. Instead of returning promptly, he went to a separate room where he became involved with Nurse C. Their actions were discovered when another nurse unexpectedly walked in and found them in a compromising situation. The matter was quickly reported to hospital authorities.
Although the patient did not suffer harm during the doctor’s absence and the procedure was completed without further issues, the case has raised concerns about professional conduct and patient safety. Dr. Anjum admitted to the allegations before the tribunal, describing his behaviour as inappropriate and taking full responsibility. He explained that the incident came at a difficult period in his personal life and expressed regret for the misconduct.
The tribunal is continuing its review of the case to determine the consequences of Dr. Anjum’s actions.
