Pope Francis passes away at 88 after long illness

Catholics in the Democratic Republic of Congo are grieving deeply following the passing of Pope Francis, who was seen by many in the country as a powerful moral guide and a voice for people suffering in silence.

His death has left a void that churchgoers say cannot easily be filled, especially in a nation facing long-standing conflict, poverty, and political instability.

The sorrow has been felt most strongly among communities that saw Pope Francis as someone who stood up for them on the global stage. His recent efforts to bring attention to the struggles in DR Congo had brought comfort to many believers. They now feel that someone who once spoke on their behalf to the world is no longer there to support their cause.

Pope Francis died at the Vatican, marking the end of a papacy that lasted more than a decade and had a deep impact far beyond Europe. In DR Congo, his death struck a personal chord because of his outspoken support during his 2023 visit to the country, where he called for peace and justice in regions torn apart by violence.

Local Catholic leaders in Kinshasa and other major cities have been organizing prayer gatherings and memorial masses. Churchgoers have laid flowers and lit candles beneath statues and in front of cathedrals to honor the late pontiff. Many faithful say that his words during his visit are still fresh in their minds, especially his call for an end to suffering in eastern Congo.

People are now asking what comes next for the Catholic Church in the region. Many wonder how the Vatican will continue its engagement with Africa, especially in areas where the Church is often the only institution offering hope, education, and healthcare. Church officials in DR Congo have urged unity during this difficult time and encouraged Catholics to carry forward the message of peace that Pope Francis often preached.

Reactions have poured in not only from religious figures but also from ordinary citizens. Some say Pope Francis brought global attention to their struggle when few others did. Others describe him as a leader who did not shy away from difficult truths, always standing on the side of the poor and displaced.

As DR Congo mourns, the late pope’s legacy continues to live in the hearts of millions. His final message to the people was one of peace, compassion, and justice—words that many hope will continue to guide the country through uncertain times.
