The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted the public to planned protests on June 12, 2024, coinciding with Democracy Day celebrations. While acknowledging citizens’ rights to assembly and expression, the DSS warns that public safety and national security must not be compromised.
“The determination by some non-state actors to incite mass disaffection through demonstrations that may turn violent will not be tolerated,” said Peter Afunanya, DSS Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications.
The DSS urges citizens to resist any attempts to cause disorder and anarchy, instead encouraging them to channel grievances through appropriate channels. The Service reaffirms its commitment to protecting the country from harmful acts and maintaining peace, in collaboration with other security agencies.
“Law-abiding citizens are enjoined to go about their businesses without fear,” Afunanya assured. “We call for continued patriotism, unity, and commitment in building a Nigeria of our collective dream.”
The DSS has provided contact information for the public to report any concerns: dss.gov.ng, dsspr@dss.gov.ng, +2349153391309, and +2349088373514.
In a statement, the DSS felicitated with the government and citizens on 25 years of unbroken democracy, urging peaceful celebrations.
