The President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Justice Edward Asante has pledged the court’s support for the ECOWAS Parliament in deepening their relations and advancing the cause of the community.
Speaking at the formal opening of the first ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in 2024, Justice Edward Asante said, “I can assure you that the Court remains available to provide whatever support that is necessary in furtherance of this and other initiatives that preoccupy the members during the sixth legislature.”
He commended the new speaker Meimunatu Ibrahima for her efforts in strengthening relations between the two institutions, saying, “It is noteworthy and gratifying that one of the first activities of the speaker was a visit to the headquarters of the Court on her assumption of duty, during which officials of the two institutions held discussions on how to deepen their relations for the mutual benefit of both institutions and the Community.”
The President also highlighted the court’s efforts to democratise access to justice through the use of technology, saying, “The Court has introduced the Electronic Case Management System (ECMS) which enables virtual court sessions, reducing costs for lawyers and applicants.”
He expressed hope that the parliament would continue to work with the court to address the challenges facing the region, including the resurgence of military coups and the need for democratic consolidation and regional integration.
“We are hopeful that based on the cordial relations with the parliament, members of parliament will rededicate themselves to working with the Court in the resolution of these challenges for a more effective Court that is responsible and continues to be a source of pride to the Community,” he said.
