Abuja, Nigeria – ECOWAS Parliament Speaker, Honorable Maimunatu Ibrahima, has called for greater representation of women in ECOWAS governance bodies.
Speaking on the role of women in decision-making processes, at the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA) event at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, on Monday, 22 July 2024 Ibrahima stressed that women’s participation is crucial for a more just and balanced society.
“As we strive for a more inclusive democracy, it is crucial to reexamine and strengthen women’s roles in decision-making within our regional community,” Ibrahima said.

The Speaker expressed gratitude to dignitaries in attendance, including Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio. Ibrahima highlighted the underrepresentation of women in decision-making bodies, stressing the need for collective commitment to address this issue.
“Women make up a significant portion of the ECOWAS population and have a vital role to play in our member states’ decision-making processes,” she said.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, and Nigeria’s Minister of Women and Social Development, Her Excellency Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye.
