Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has criticized the controversial 18-year age cap for university admissions, calling it counterproductive to the government’s efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children in the country.
Alausa, addressing the media on Tuesday after resuming office, described the policy introduced by his predecessor, Tahir Mamman, as unsustainable.
The policy, which sets 18 years as the minimum age for admission to tertiary institutions, was introduced in July and is expected to take effect in 2025.
It aims to ensure that students are mature enough to handle the demands of higher education, but has faced backlash from stakeholders concerned that it could exclude exceptional students.
“The 18-year age cap works against our efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children,” Alausa said. “We need policies that allow younger, capable students to enter tertiary institutions without unnecessary barriers.”
The policy also stipulates that candidates who do not complete the required number of years in primary and secondary school would be barred from sitting for the O’level exams, adding to concerns about its potential negative impact on the education system.
Alausa proposed maintaining a 16-year minimum age for tertiary school admission, with exceptions for exceptionally gifted students.
The minister emphasized that flexibility should be incorporated into the system to accommodate those who may be ready for higher education earlier than the prescribed age.
The debate surrounding the policy has been intense, with critics arguing that it could prevent talented students from advancing to higher education and further exacerbate the country’s education challenges.
Alausa is one of 10 ministers to receive new portfolios following President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle in October.
Prior to his appointment as education minister, Alausa served as the minister of state for health.
