The Senate has constituted a 12 member committee to work with the House of Representatives on the proposed Electoral Act Amendment, amid growing public debate surrounding the legislation.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the composition of the committee on Tuesday during an emergency plenary session convened to address issues arising from the amendment process.
Among the senators appointed to the joint committee are Orji Uzor Kalu and Tahir Mungono. The committee is expected to engage with its counterpart in the House of Representatives to harmonise positions and address contentious clauses in the Electoral Amendment Act.
The move follows heightened public interest and protests over specific provisions of the proposed amendments, which critics argue could affect transparency and credibility in future elections.
Further details of the committee’s mandate and timeline are expected to be made public as deliberations with the House of Representatives progress.
