Envoy Urge Nigerians In South Africa To Be Cautious Ahead Of AFCON Clash

By Omonu YG Nelson

Pretoria, February 6, 2024: The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued an advisory urging Nigerians residing in the country to exercise caution and be mindful of their conduct ahead of the highly anticipated AFCON semi-final match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana on Wednesday, February 7th.

The advisory was prompted by “potentially inflammatory online comments” made by some South African citizens, expressing hostility towards Nigerians in the context of the upcoming soccer match. The comments reportedly referenced “showing pepper” to Nigerians and celebrating Bafana Bafana’s potential loss in a negative manner.

Key points in the Advisory:

Be aware of surroundings: Nigerians are advised to be cautious about their surroundings, especially when choosing public places to watch the match.

Avoid provocative behaviour: The High Commission urges Nigerians to maintain their usual good conduct and avoid loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations, particularly if the Super Eagles win.

Obey the law: Maintaining law-abiding behavior is crucial before, during, and after the match.

Seek help if needed: In case of any provocation or harassment, Nigerians are advised to avoid responding and immediately seek assistance from the High Commission or relevant authorities.

While acknowledging the potential risks, the High Commission also emphasized the importance of fostering positive engagement and sportsmanship throughout the match. “Let us all enjoy the beautiful game in the spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie,” the advisory stated.

The advisory does not mention any specific instances of violence or threats, suggesting the online comments may be more rhetoric than actionable intent.

However, it highlights the importance of proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians in South Africa during this high-charged event.

By following the High Commission’s advisory and prioritising safety and respectful behaviour, Nigerians in South Africa can contribute to a positive and enjoyable experience for all during the AFCON match.
