European Union countries have agreed on a new set of sanctions against Russia as part of efforts to maintain pressure amid ongoing discussions between the United States and Russia.
The latest measures, expected to be finalized by EU foreign ministers on Monday, include a ban on Russian aluminum imports.
This marks the 16th round of sanctions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began three years ago.
In addition to targeting the aluminum sector, the EU will blacklist 73 more vessels from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” used to bypass restrictions on oil exports.
More Russian banks will also be removed from the SWIFT global payment system, and eight media outlets will be banned from broadcasting in Europe.
The decision comes as U.S. President Donald Trump begins negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine, raising concerns among European leaders.
Talks between American and Russian officials recently took place in Saudi Arabia, sparking fears in Europe that a deal could favor Moscow.
European leaders insist on maintaining sanctions and economic pressure to counter any potential advantage Russia might gain from the U.S.-led negotiations.
