Expert Calls for National Programme to Harness Climate, Economic Benefits of Cashew

By Omonu YG Nelson

The National President of the Cashew Farmers, Processors, and Marketing Cooperative Limited, Yunusa Gabriel Enemali, has emphasised the critical role of cashew in addressing climate change and promoting economic empowerment. According to Enemali, cashew is a climate-resilient crop that provides economic benefits, health benefits, and environmental benefits.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, yesterday, 18 February, 2025, Enemali noted that cashew trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their biomass and soil, making them a valuable tool in the fight against climate change. This unique ability of cashew trees to trap carbon makes them an essential crop in the efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Enemali highlighted the numerous benefits of cashew, including its ability to prevent soil erosion. Cashew trees have a deep root system that holds the soil in place, preventing erosion and landslides. This is particularly important in areas prone to heavy rainfall or flooding.

In addition to its environmental benefits, cashew also promotes biodiversity conservation. Cashew trees provide a habitat for various species of birds, insects, and animals, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. This is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the environment.

Enemali also emphasised the economic potential of cashew, which provides income opportunities for farmers, processors, and traders. Cashew is a valuable crop that can be sold locally or exported to other countries, generating revenue for those involved in its production and trade.

To fully harness the benefits of cashew, Enemali called for a partnership between the government, farmers, and other stakeholders. He proposed a national program to plant 10 million cashew trees over the next 10 years, which would not only help to combat climate change but also provide employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

Such a programme would require the collaboration of various stakeholders, including the government, farmers, processors, and traders. Enemali retrated the need for policy and advocacy support to promote sustainable agricultural practices and carbon sequestration.

He noted that the global cashew industry can collaborate on climate change mitigation efforts, sharing best practices and technology. This would enable Nigeria to learn from other countries and adopt strategies that have been successful in promoting sustainable cashew production.

He also stressed the importance of supporting smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of the cashew industry in Nigeria. These farmers require training, equipment, and other forms of support to enable them to produce high-quality cashew nuts that can compete in the global market.

According to him, cashew is a vital crop that can help address climate change, promote economic empowerment, and support sustainable development. He urged the government and other stakeholders to take deliberate action to support the development of the cashew industry in Nigeria.

“Cashew is the diamond from the tree. It has economic benefits, health benefits, and environmental benefits. Let us work together to harness its potential and create a better future for ourselves and generations to come,” Enemali said.
