In Rawalpindi, Pakistan, a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed by her father after she refused to delete her TikTok account.
Police say the father objected to her presence on the app and became violent when she did not follow his demands. He was later arrested by local authorities.
The family initially told police that the teenager had died by suicide, but further investigation revealed it was an act of so-called “honour killing.”
The incident happened on Tuesday, and police confirmed the details in a report shared with media outlets.
This is not the first time a young woman in Pakistan has lost her life due to her online presence.
Just last month, a 17-year-old social media influencer, Sana Yousaf, was killed at her home.
She had built a large following by sharing videos about her daily life, fashion, and favorite places.
TikTok continues to be widely used in Pakistan, especially among young people. It is popular partly because it is easy to use, even for those with limited education.
For many women, it provides a rare chance to reach an audience and earn income.
Despite this, women in Pakistan still face major challenges in using digital platforms.
Only 30 percent of women in the country own smartphones, compared to 58 percent of men.
In rural areas, especially in regions like Balochistan where tribal customs remain strong, girls have also been killed by family members for appearing in TikTok videos.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has also taken steps to limit the app’s reach, citing concerns over its content, including themes related to sexuality and gender expression.
