The Nigerian government has raised a flood alarm, asking Nigerians living around river banks and flood-prone areas to relocate to avert a flood disaster.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) asked Nigerians living near the banks of the River Benue Basin to promptly move to safer areas.
The Director General of the NIHSA, Umar Mohammed, in a statement issued on Thursday said that water levels in the River Benue had reached flooding levels due to heavy rainfall.
Mohammed also advised residents along the River Niger to relocate, as the management of Kainji and Jebba Dams is working to control floodwaters.
The NIHSA boss emphasised the importance of cooperation with emergency management agencies to enhance resilience against flooding and mitigate its effects.
Recall that recently, the Nigerian government issued warnings for citizens to seek safer grounds following the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
The warning was sequel to the tragic flooding incidents in Maiduguri, Borno State, caused by the overflowing Alau Dam which resulted in over 30 deaths and destruction of thousands of homes.
