Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Saturday evening, according to police and his security team.
The 81-year-old, who served as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer after becoming known as “America’s Mayor” for his leadership during the 9/11 attacks, was riding in a Ford Bronco when another vehicle struck it from behind.
The impact sent both cars into the median, leaving them heavily damaged.
Giuliani sustained a fractured thoracic vertebrae, cuts, bruises, and injuries to his left arm and leg, his security guard Michael Ragusa confirmed.
Others involved in the crash were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident occurred shortly after Giuliani stopped to assist an alleged victim of domestic violence who flagged him down on the roadside.
He reportedly called 911 and rendered aid before the collision. Police later confirmed they were investigating the domestic violence case when they witnessed the crash nearby.
Authorities said the driver who hit Giuliani’s car has been identified, though no charges have yet been filed. The accident remains under investigation.
Giuliani, first elected mayor of New York in 1993, later ran for U.S. president in 2008 and joined Trump’s political and legal circle during his 2016 campaign.
In recent years, he faced legal troubles over false election claims, including a $148 million defamation judgment that he partially settled earlier this year.
