The Rivers State Government has terminated the N134 billion contract earlier awarded for the reconstruction of the State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt.
The decision, announced on Thursday after a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, nullified the contract granted to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The contract had been awarded during the period of emergency administration under the leadership of Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (retd).
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council directed CCECC to refund the N20 billion mobilisation fee it had received for the project.
The government’s move is believed to be part of ongoing efforts to review contracts awarded during the interim administration and ensure transparency and accountability in the state’s finances.
Meanwhile, the Council also approved the formation of a six-member committee headed by Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu. The committee has been tasked with identifying and recommending appropriate sites for the construction of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres across Rivers State.
According to the Council, the CBT centres will serve as dedicated facilities to support candidates sitting for national examinations and other computer-based assessments, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
The development marks another decisive step in Governor Fubara’s drive to reform project management and restore efficiency in the state’s public infrastructure sector.
