A 100-level Cybersecurity student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has reportedly died following an alleged assault by members of the Man O’ War cadet group over a disputed ₦13,000.
The incident was said to have occurred after the student was accused of theft and subsequently taken into custody by the cadets for disciplinary action.
According to reports, he was allegedly detained and subjected to punishment for several hours before he became unresponsive.
He was later confirmed dead, a development that has sparked outrage among students and raised fresh concerns about the conduct of quasi-security and disciplinary groups operating within tertiary institutions.
The incident has triggered calls for a thorough investigation and demands for accountability from affected parties, with students and observers urging a review of the operations of such groups on campus.
Authorities are yet to issue an official comprehensive statement as investigations are expected to determine the exact cause of death and those responsible.
