By Omonu YG Nelson

Abuja, Nigeria – The Gambia has reported significant strides in economic growth, youth development, and climate resilience. Presenting the country’s report at the ongoing ECOWAS Parliament First Ordinary Session of Year 2024, the Gambian government outlined its achievements.

The country’s economy showcased remarkable resilience, expanding by 4.8% in 2023, a performance the Central Bank of The Gambia projects to accelerate to 5.4% in 2024.

“The Gambian economy has demonstrated its strength and resilience,” affirmed the Governor of the Central Bank.

Beyond economic prosperity, The Gambia has prioritized youth empowerment, equipping 745 young individuals with life skills and certifying 32 trainers in SME development methodologies.

“Youth empowerment is pivotal to our nation’s progress,” emphasized the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Recognizing the urgent threat of climate change, the Gambian government has intensified efforts in sustainable environmental management, climate action, and disaster preparedness.

“We are resolutely committed to mitigating climate change impacts and building a resilient future,” declared the Minister of Environment.

Furthermore, The Gambia has made substantial progress towards macroeconomic convergence, fulfilling two key criteria, including curbing central bank financing of the fiscal deficit and bolstering external reserves.

“Our dedication to macroeconomic convergence reinforces our commitment to regional integration within ECOWAS,” stated the Minister of Finance.

The Gambia’s accomplishments in economic growth, youth development, climate resilience, and macroeconomic convergence underscore its commitment to sustainable development and regional cooperation.

The five-man The Gambian delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament  is led by Hon Billay G. Tunkara. Others are: Hon. Billay G. Tunkar, Hon. Alhagie S. Darbo Hon. Maimuna Ceesay Hon. Amadou, Hon Sheriff Sarr
