President Adama Barrow of The Gambia visited Nigeria to personally offer his condolences to the family of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025.
The visit took place in Daura, Katsina State, where Buhari was buried according to Islamic rites.
Barrow arrived in Nigeria days after announcing his intention to pay tribute to the late leader.
On reaching Daura, he was received by members of the Buhari family, including former First Lady Aisha Buhari.
The Gambian president joined them in prayers and shared kind words to comfort the family during the time of mourning.
President Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died in London while receiving medical treatment. He was 82 years old.
His remains were brought back to Nigeria for burial in his hometown, following traditions. In response to his death, President Bola Tinubu declared a national mourning period, during which flags were flown at half-mast for seven days across the country.
The condolence visit by President Barrow was seen as a heartfelt gesture from a fellow African leader. It showed the respect and closeness between the two West African nations.
During the visit, Barrow also extended sympathy to the government and people of Nigeria, describing Buhari’s death as a great loss to the continent.
President Barrow’s action reflects strong regional ties and mutual respect among leaders in the region.
His visit added to the many expressions of sorrow from world leaders who sent messages or visited to honour Buhari’s memory.
After meeting with the family and offering prayers, President Barrow departed Daura, leaving behind words of support and comfort.
His visit stood out as one of the first high-profile condolence missions since Buhari’s burial.
